Seeing an orbital image of planet Earth at night you immediately become aware of two things. As James Lovelock recently observed, “civilisation is energy-intensive” yet the real energy that is involved in human existence cannot be seen as easily as the orbital photo of our nightly planet suggests.

The real energy driving the human experiment is psychic energy. There is undoubtedly some correlation between the physical energy emitted each night by our cities and the psychic forces that are driving late-modernity, yet this tells only part of a much bigger story.

Much of the psychic energy driving the human experiment is bounded by traditions. In fact it is quite a plausible proposition to claim that traditions are energy streams that draw on energy from the past, condense and focus energy in the present and, like a torch light, channel and project energy into the future. The fibre optic cables and satellite transmissions that bring speed and flexibility to the planet and its globalising economy and culture, as well as the urban incandescence of the Earth at night, are in fact the by products of an invisible but clearly defined confluence of energy generating traditions.

Roots & Rivers

Rabindranath Tagore, one of India’s great poets, describes creation as a waking up, an explosion of energy. Not the traditional Big Bang, but something akin as Brahma awakens and its joy is boundless. The roots of the Indic tradition lie in this expression of boundless-joy. Today this story has merged with many others like the course of the Ganges as it first meets the great rivers of Yamuna, Ghaghara and Kosi and goes on through twists and turns, finally spitting again and again in the monsoonal Delta of Bengal.

The myths and metaphors that frame our unconscious daily coming and goings are what we need to turn to when seeking to rethink civilisation and our role in its maintenance.

The Educational Power Bill

When you think of traditions as conduits of power it is possible to look at any social structure and ask about it: What traditions power it? Who pays? Are there alternative energy sources?

Take one of societies most complex and contested institutions: Education. Far from being monolithic education is a veritable power grid generating huge energy for the expansive and predatory economic and the cultural practices of a globalising world.

The energy of this system draws on an array of traditions each bringing to the current system energy in the form of values, practices and beliefs. The humanism that drove education for centuries has been absorbed by the utilitarian needs of a rapidly globalising society. The pragmatic concerns of utilitarianism are at least in part off set by an opening up of democratic processes and a greening of the school. Furthermore, we also have the romantic tradition placing the child at the centre of the learning equation. Thus we find humanist, utilitarian, democratic, environmental and romantic strands at work; all provide energy and work to maintain the coherence of the system.

And the cost? The humanist tradition privileged the old elites, where culture and money and power coalesced, the poor payed; the utilitarian, as power shifted from the old elites to the new, a new form of education emerged and the user pays, ultimately the poor are excluded and as money flows upwards, they pay again.

The democratic offers a way out, as does the environmental: both stem from traditions that challenge hierarchies, yet both are too fragmented to challenge the dominance of the utilitarian, their effect is ameliorative but they contain the potential energy to challenge this dominance should a shift in the world-system cause a ‘power failure’ – such a shift could be either social or environmental. And the romantic? Child centredness is powerful, as it is the root of both soft and hard individualism, but it is too easily coopted by the dominant cultural elites, particularly those seeking a cultural ‘off-set’ for the vacuum created by the loss of humanism to utilitarianism.

Alternative Energy

We have lived in a resource rich world that at the physical level is coming to recognise its limits. What has been left largely unharnessed is the natural capital essential to traditions: human energy. To date human psychic capital has been focussed on the control and manipulation of the physical world. It has been largely shaped and directed by the materialism inherent to the Enlightenment and the drive to generate capital.

Holistic solutions embrace spiritual energy. This is energy locked in ancient traditions such as that Tagore describes above. Captured by the so-called ‘Protestant work ethic’ creation becomes an act of toil; schooling as a result is about ‘hard’ work, productivity and accountability. Add to this a healthy dose of capitalist rhetoric with ‘user pays’ and ‘choice’ on the menu and we end up with an entropic system that consumes energy, in the form of the lives, heart and imaginations of people and communities, rather than generates it.

This formula can be turned on its head with creation becoming an act of joy. Creative, life-affirming neohumanist traditions generate energy. If we infuse education with spiritual energy drawn from the practices, values and commitments of the great spiritual traditions we produce a system that channels powerful creative forces into the future. The turn is inward and thus saves us from the materialist despair inherent to the thinking of James Lovelock who can only measure energy at the physical finite level.

Physical energy is a measure of the psychic, but it is a symptom not a driving force. This is so, despite the obvious fact that both physical decline and technological advance, a la Moore’s Law, have momentums of their own once they gets beyond a specific point.

To harness traditions of power and depth and focus them into systems such as education is a powerful idea. Education that generates rather than consumes energy has the potential to return hope and creativity to the human experiment and enliven our daily dealings with the pressing environmental concerns that seem so overwhelming. Moore’s law and environmental catastrophe theories are certainly a pressing concern but they overlook the largely untapped power that lies within us all.

However it may seem strange and unlike the woman in States and European countries are dressed, don’t let that intimidate you. This style is absolutely typical for a Russian bride to wear high heels on a regular basis, to wear dresses and look polished and perfect even if she is simply going to a store. Most women here work and coming to office automatically implies wearing dressy clothes. You will also see many of them wear jeans, which is acceptable casual attire for men as well (as everywhere in the world I guess :-)).

Si te mudas a otro país o ciudad, sea cual fuera la razón, trabajo, situación económica, familia, novio, novia, cambio de aire; todas las razones llegan a ser insuficientes pero necesarias a la hora de adaptarse.

Adaptarse a una nueva cultura, idioma, ambiente, clima, reglas sociales, y estilo de vida es muy duro y al mismo tiempo interesante. En mi caso personal, cuando me mude de país fue porque mi familia lo decidió hacer, no seguí mis necesidades ya que era demasiado chica para seguir mi propio camino y demasiado grande para depender de sus decisiones. Sin embargo seguí las decisiones de mi familia.

Al principio de mi llegada, decidí tomarme todo fácilmente como si fuera irreal, ya que era muy duro enfrentar la realidad de que me aleje de mi vida, que deje todo lo que tenia atrás.

Decidí entonces que todo seria una gran vacación. Junto con el clima era caluroso, vivía cerca de la playa lo cual en mi país no lo tenía entonces mi vida seria un cuento total. A lo largo de los meses, no hacia mas nada que salir, comprar, conocer gente y divertirme sin ningún propósito de lo que iba a pasar en mi futuro.

Luego de unos meses conocí a un chico que creía que cumplía con todas mis expectativas de hombre ideal. Popular, atractivo, simpático, deportista y demás. Comenzamos a salir y creía que era el sueño de mi vida hecho realidad, ¿Qué podía ser mas perfecto que eso?

La realidad me cayo de golpe cuando me di cuenta que nada de lo que creía tan perfecto era así, sino una idealización de eso. Mi plata se me iba disminuyendo poco a poco, el novio perfecto no eran perfecto ni mucho menos sino que solo quería demostrarlo ser, y traía consigo más complicaciones y dilemas que me llevarían a sufrir en la relación. Mis alrededores no me satisfacían como yo pensaba que iban a hacerlo, pero decidí que debía intentarlo igual ya que todo parecía perfecto y no lo quería arruinar.

Luego vino el invierno y comencé lo que había planeado antes de mi llegada: estudiar moda y convertirme en una súper diseñadora. Sin embargo me encontré con un lugar lleno de gente que creía ser demasiado rara y competitiva, sin nada de ganas de socializar ni conocer a alguien nuevo. La presión de ser aceptado a la escuela de arte y ganar la simpatía de los profesores era mayor que otra cosa.

Me encontré en situaciones difíciles como en una clase de moldes, tratando de hacer una pollera que me llevaría hacer un día entero solo el molde. Ahí me di cuenta que lo que necesitaba era estudiar en un idioma que me era cómodo, con gente parecida a mi con ganas de disfrutar la época universitaria y aprender pero con un propósito mas profundo que llenara mi alma.

Luego de un tiempo pensé y pensé que todo lo que creía necesario para mi felicidad en realidad no me satisfacía y no entendía mis sentimientos y descontento. Mi familia tampoco lo entendía. La verdad es que hay gente que sabe encontrar lo que busca más fácil que otra. Pueden seguir su propio instinto sin importar lo que dirán los demás, si aceptan o no. Hay otra, que les es más difícil y necesitan demostrar a los demás que logran lo que se proponen, sin saber si realmente lo desean.

En fin, mudarse de país es algo muy complicado que también tiene cosas positivas. Ayuda a abrir la cabeza y darse cuenta que uno no esta solo, que hay mucha gente diferente aparte de lo que uno creía único, que las culturas son diferentes y parecidas en muchos aspectos, que a pesar de que uno intente adaptarse a algo nuevo, en el fondo es importante mantener nuestra identidad. Debes seguir tus sentimientos siempre, porque tu solo sabes lo que es bueno para ti.

How to defeat terrorism

Many will say it is because America has troops in Saudi Arabia where the two holiest locations to the Muslim people are, these people are wrong. This fight is not about the terrorists wanting America out of the Middle East.

This was is about the pride of one individual. Osama Bin Laden, and that’s all it is about.

In 1991 when Saddam Hussein Invaded Kuwait, Saudi Arabia was worried and was looking to get help to protect its oil fields. Osama Bin Laden offered his assistance to help protect his homeland with the help of his Mujahadim, who had helped protect Afghanistan from the Russians in the 80's.

Hemp has thousands of uses that we are unable to exploit because of its illegal status.

During WWII hemp was used for the rigging on parachutes as well as rope and material for uniforms.

Nowadays Marijuana can be used to relieve pain and some of the effect of cancer treatments and old age.

It has been proven to slow down the spreading of Alzheimer's, relieve the pressure behind the eyes from glaucoma. It also helps relieve migraine headaches and the side effect of cancer treatment.

But until the United States realizes how much money can be made from legalizing it, it will remain illegal.

Recently in the news across the USA there have been several reports of parents leaving their children locked in their cars, while the parents sit in a casino and gamble.

The FSU player Nicholson who is a very good player was held out of the bowl game between PSU and FSU over allegations that he was involved in some sort of situation with a woman.

Paterno was asked about it during a press conference and Paterno who is always a gentleman of good nature and sense basically said it's tough out there in the world and you have to be careful and kids have to be smart and know who they're getting involved with and so on and so forth.

The coach was not accusing Nicholson and he was not accusing this woman of anything in my mind he was merely stating the situation of the world today and the need to be careful in it.

The womans organization took a hissy fit and asked for the coach to be removed after all these wonderful years of service and after all these years of looking after kids and making sure they graduated and got good grades because I suppose they think he wasn't sympathetic enough to this woman who is making the accusations against this player.

My feeling on this is when did we on this planet become guilty until proven innocent? In this country we are supposed to be innocent until proven guilty. I am wondering really why Nicholson of FSU was not allowed to play and what was the basis for not allowing him to play? Anyone can make an accusation against someone of anything but until there is proof of a crime an allegation is just an allegation.

Let's say it turns out Nicholson is indeed innocent then can he sue this woman and turn back time to play in the biggest college game of his life? He'll get nothing and still miss the biggest college game of his career because someone alledged something which in my mind is not fair in the least.

Don't get me wrong if indeed evidence comes forward to find Nicholson did do something then I feel for this girl and her family but let's remember that it's innocent until proven guilty folks and lets not bring out the firing squad when good coaches and good men give an opinion.

Let's see the evidence and have it bring out the facts first before we make our decisions on Nicholson and we certainly should not involve a great coach and a great man in this nonsense for making a comment.

I'm disappointed that a national organization would be so quick to jump on an innocent man and a good coach and role model over his comments that to me seemed fine. The National Organization for Women or NOW as they are known should be ashamed really and should get facts on cases and get evidence before they send out the axe man.

Is The World Getting Sicker & More Depraved?

If it's true that the Internet reflects our society then one can only conclude that the World is indeed becoming sicker and more twisted everyday.

Porn on the Internet is nothing new, in fact it's the number one money earner and has, to a large degree, helped propel it to where it is today. This fact alone is really no surprise to anyone as the very nature of the medium allows people anonymity which is perfect for the 'pervert' that lurks within us all. But it's interesting to note a new 'craze' emerging which are sites loaded with weird videos, bizarre pictures and weird confessions. Some of these sites are so popular that they are making their creators thousands of dollars a day according to a recent study.

What is it about our society that makes people so interested in seeing the latest 'beheading video' or the current media darlings 'nipple slip' photos that 'accidentally' got released to the press. Why do we love to see people fighting, vomiting, having accidents or some other socially offensive and sometimes morally reprehensible activity. I believe the answer is simple. The Media.

In a bid to get higher and higher ratings TV stations are going further and further to shock their audiences and compel them to keep watching. This is then reflected in other media; newspapers, magazines, books, billboard advertising, popular music etc. It should therefore come as no shock that this relentless search for the next shocking and disgusting event has found it's way onto our computers and into our living rooms. The conservatives and the church have been fighting a losing battle against this onslaught of 'perversion' for years and show no sign of abating or getting any closer to a 'victory'. The sad truth is they will never stop it or even put a tiny dent in it's continued growth. There will always be way more sick degenerates than these moralizing, overbearing protectors of society and they will ultimately fail. This will never prevent them from trying as it is their mantra and the whole reason for their existence. Without sick, twisted and depraved people what would these good folk do? They may be forced to actually look at their own lives for a moment instead of prying into others with their 'good intentions' and their 'we know best' attitudes.

There is more money to be made in a sick, twisted and perverted society and marketers and the Media are only to aware of this. The fact is our society IS sick and twisted and whether we like it or not it's getting worse. I say this not as a judgement but more as a realization of the truth.

Online is the American Dream

Every generation has dreamed of a better life for their children, and many decided to pack up the family and move to America and that is how most Americans came to be Americans.

For 200 years people suffering from poverty, hunger or oppressive governments have dreamed of a better life for themselves and their families, and came to United States of America in search of the American Dream.

Many people around the world have to work 18 hours a day just to make enough money to survive; to these people the American dream is nothing more then a less hard life and a better education for them and their children, and to some it is getting rich without working hard to do it.

This is not much different from the mentality from an American who maybe builds houses, or works in a factory or some other type of physically demanding job that they hate, and at the end of the day they dream of winning that jackpot in an online casino.

Winning the grand prize and making enough money to put a nice roof over their kids heads, put the kids in a good school, money for college. This is exactly what the American dream is about.

Many Americans work 2 or more jobs a day to support their families, and have no way to get to a casino, they just do not have the time to get there. Does that mean that they should not be allowed to follow their dreams because they have to do it from home?

This is like telling a new immigrant that the American Dream has been outlawed because you may squander you money trying to achieve it.

What if a hard working man saved up some money and decided he wanted to open a restaurant and the government told him no, because the restaurant business is dangerous and most new restaurants fail within the first 6 months.

The law making online gambling illegal is a direct blow to why most of our grandparents moved to the United States.

The entire idea of the American dream is to be able to do better in life then the cards you have been dealt, just like in poker you are dealt your cards then after looking at them you have the chance to exchange your bad cards for better ones. The ability for a child from poor family to be able to get a good education and to make more of himself then the generation before him did.

Many people around the world are dealt a bad hand in life, but the American dream helps them rise above it to make what before may have seemed impossible become an every day occurrence.

Pure and simple the American dream gives hope to people who never expected to have hope again, and online casinos give people the same thing.
