Break-Ups And Doubts

Shall I break-up? Am I right? Or my thinking is wrong somewhere? What if I hurt my partner with the break-up? What if I cannot live normally after break-up? Shall I recover from it? Should I break-up? I am having doubts about the reasons. I am doubtful about the consequences. I am confused. What shall I do? After life reaches a stage where living together becomes very painful, one begins thinking of break-up. But the doubts can be overwhelming sometimes. They can mar the judgment. They confuse the thinking. This makes life further trouble some. What is the way out? The first step should be giving your mind little rest. A tense mind tends to lose the way. Relax and let go of these thoughts for few days. Involve yourself in other activities. Relaxing your mind will give you some peace and help you think well. After you begin feeling peaceful, begin writing down your reasons for breaking up. Don’t miss anything. Write down all the reasons clearly and write explanations wherever needed. This will give you further insight into why you want to break-up. Pluses and Minuses - write down both pluses and minuses of the break-up. Read them carefully and weigh them. If necessary, consult a close friend. After you become sure that you must break-up and that will be in your interest and in the interest of your partner, go ahead.

Living Fossils

No doubt you have heard the claims from young earth creationists about living fossils. A "living fossil" is an organism that is thought to have been extinct, and then it shows up alive on planet earth.

The claim by young earth creationists is that these living fossils are proof that the earth is young. The reasoning is that since all organisms were alive only 4,300 years ago, before the time that they date the Flood of Noah, then it is reasonable to assume that they are still alive today.

I'm sure everyone is aware of the most famous living fossil, the coelacanth, the fish thought to be extinct 65 million years ago. In 1938, a specimen was caught off the coast of South Africa, and since then several more have been caught and examined. Besides the coelacanth, Answers in Genesis gives several examples in the articles linked above.

Determining an Organism's Life Span

How is a fossil's life range is determined? When an organism is found in the fossil record, paleontologists look for the oldest and youngest specimen to determine it's life range. For example, if the oldest specimen of a species of dinosaur is in a rock formation dated during the Berrasian Age of the early Cretaceous, then the earliest this dinosaur existed is about 140 million years ago (140 Ma). If the youngest example of this same species is from the Turonian Age of the Late Cretaceous, then it died out about 90 million years ago. Thus, the dinosaur is said to have lived from 140 to 90 Ma.

After this date range is published, another sample of this dinosaur is unearthed in a rock bed dated to the Santonian Age of the Late Cretaceous. Does this mean the earlier dates were wrong...obviously. But the wrong dates were not based on guesswork, but on a lack of complete evidence. Now, this dinosaur's lifespan is said to be from 140 to 84 Ma.

Scientists make this kind of adjustment all the time. New fossils are found, extending the known lifespan of the organism because of new fossil discoveries.

There is no trick or deception on the part of the scientist...he/she is merely interpreting the available evidence to reach a conclusion.

What happens when a fossil species is found to be alive, such as the coelacanth? It's known lifespan is extended...that's it! It doesn't' mean the earth is young, it doesn't even provide good evidence for a young earth. For the coelacanth, its lifespan was extended from 400-65 million years ago to 400 Ma to the present. Nothing further can be implied from this data.

In the case of our dinosaur, if it was found alive today, naturally the young earth creationists would claim it is a living fossil. The real scientific world would merely adjust its lifespan to 140 Ma to the present. There would be no panic in the scientific world...they would not wonder if the earth really is only 6,000 years old. The rest of the evidence clearly indicates an old earth, and one living dino would not contradict that.

The presence of a living fossil in no way is evidence for a young earth. Yes, there are fossils that occasionally turn up living, but there are millions more which are long gone, which went extinct millions of years ago, and there is no evidence they are alive today. Therefore, we have millions of extinct species, and a handful of so-called "living fossils" which have a gap of millions of years in the fossil record. The evidence strongly supports millions of years of extinction, and an old earth.

When a "living fossil" is found, YECs naturally jump on it and proclaim it as proof of a young earth. However, when they grasp at this one straw and bring attention to it, they are ignoring the 50 foot tall haystack from where it came from.

Personality Types- Aggressive Or Passive

I am the world. The world must obey me. I can never be wrong. I know what is to be done and how. All of you must follow what I say without any protest, because I tolerate no dissent. I am the storehouse of all the knowledge and what I do not know is not worth knowing. I am the most intelligent person going around and though I don't show it clearly, I know that all of you are much lower than me in intelligence. I am the boss.

Please be with me. I do not know how to face the world. I will do what you say, but please protect me from this world. I don't know much and please guide me at every step. I need you. Please help me at all the times.

These are two ends of extreme personalities. The first one - aggressive and the second one -passive. Psychology is as complex as the human mind and as the time passes more discoveries and more theories get propounded. But I am not talking about clinical psychology. I am talking about what we observe in our everyday life and what it teaches us.

As you read the descriptions above, you will agree that both the types are not healthy. The healthy personality has respect for its strengths and acknowledges its weaknesses without feeling bad about them. The healthy personality respects others for their strengths and does not show any disdain for their weaknesses. He/she knows that all of us are imperfect in some way. The healthy personality does not try to overwhelm others with knowledge, but helps with guidance. The healthy type is equally not overwhelmed by more dominant people but acknowledges that they are good in some areas and respects them for that. But does not behave submissively.

In this world, none of us is perfect. We all should be ready to learn new things without feeling inferior. All right, I do not know how to play the piano. Please teach me. If I find out that I will learn it and like playing I will continue learning, otherwise I will try my hand at something else. For a healthy person, the qualities do not make a person inferior or superior. He/she treats all as human beings first and says that some one is good or not very good at doing something. If a healthy personality has to express his/her opinion about someone's shortcoming, it will not be - that person is a fool, but that person has certain deficiencies but the deficiencies can be taken care of by proper learning.
