DON'T ASSUME YOU HAVE A SAFE AND SECURE HOTEL ROOM

I'm sitting here trying to decide on what to write about tonight and my wife is packing for her business trip tomorrow. Then it hit me, Hotel Safety. Something everyone takes for granted. Your usually exhausted from the trip and just want to lay down and go to sleep, maybe get a shower in first. You never really hear about any problems at hotels, so most people just assume that as soon as they are in the door and standing at the front counter, that they are safe.

Some reasons you never really here about crime at hotels are that victims are usually from out of town, so unless it is an extremely violent crime, there is little chance it will make the news. Also, in the case of thefts, most people don't report it to the police, but rather to the hotel themselves, who try to handle it in a customer services manner by either reimbursing the customer or telling them that the hotel is not responsible for someone entering their room and stealing from them. Some hotels will even go to the extent of placing signs in the room stating that they are not responsible for your belongings left in the room. Yes they provide safes and safety deposit boxes, but I prefer to bring my own Safety Items and personal alarms.

In a scenario familiar to most overnight business travelers and to a lesser extent the vacation traveler. Your flight was delayed, maybe both taking off and waiting for a gate, the cab or rental car counter lines at the airport were endless and the hotel check-in was a mess. Jet lag is kicking in hard and fast. It's very late, you're tired and you have a breakfast meeting with a key client at 6:30 AM. You get your key, avoid the bellman, if your lucky enough to be at a hotel that has one, and then head to your room to collapse into bed. Stop and think for a moment. Take the next few minutes to perform these safety, security and cleanliness checks and get ready for the next day. These "how to's" will save you time the next morning, they could even save your life some day.

1. When you first enter your room prop the door open, turn on the lights, and check the closets, bathroom, under the bed and behind the drapes. Mistakes do happen and we've all heard about someone else being assigned to the same room. This happens more frequently in suites with adjoining bedrooms, where they can rent them as separate rooms as well. Or there could be a thief, or worse, a predator. In any case, don't close the door until you are sure the room is empty.

2. Check that all connecting doors, windows and sliding doors are locked. If at all possible, avoid first floor rooms with sliding doors or direct access to the outside.

3. Once you lock the door and attach the safety chain, check the diagram on the back of the door to review the nearest exits and stairwells, then mentally plan your escape route. Look out the door, up and down the hall and find the exit signs, check that they are illuminated. If the lights are out, be helpful and contact the front desk to let them know. The few seconds that it takes to review the exit information can save yours or someone else's life in the event of a fire, earthquake or other emergency. Most fire engine ladders can only reach up to the 6th floor, so it's a good idea to always request a lower floor.

4. Make sure you double lock your door and then attach the door chain. You might even bring a Portable Door Alarm with you to wake you in the event someone tries to enter unannounced. These are great items that are well worth their small investment. Use the peephole if someone that you were not expecting knocks. Do not open the door to anyone that you did not request to come to the room. Immediately call the front desk and have them send someone up to talk with the unannounced visitor.

All simple things that we really know we should do, we just think to ourselves, "It can't happen to me". You lock your doors, put your seat belt on and look both ways when we cross the street. This is no different. A few extra minutes could change your life.

Does the American government see its citizens as its children?

In Americas 230 year history the government seems to have forgotten that there job is to run the government as the people see as best and not the government telling the people what is best for them.

The most recent example is the Internet gambling Ban signed into law last week by President Bush. The bill makes it illegal for banks and credit card companies to transfer money to casinos for the purpose of wagering on sports or games of chance, like roulette, blackjack and poker.

These games are harmlessly enjoyed regularly by millions of Americans everyday, but some people become addicted to these games so the government is telling all of its citizens that no one is allowed to play these games in an online casino.

This is not the first case of the government going against the wishes of the people, in the early 1900’s the government decided that the consumption of Alcohol should be banned, because some people were developing health and mental problems related to drinking too much. So rather then educating the people on the ill effects of prolonged Alcohol abuse the American government banned Alcohol.

But instead of reducing the consumption of Alcoholic beverages it increased, and because the government was not allowing the production or importing of Alcohol, organized grime got into the moonshine business, and eventually the Government saw the error of their decision and repealed the law.

Another great example of a failed policy to protect the people is the war on drugs that the government has been aging since the early 1980’s Billions of tax dollars a year goes into the war on drugs, but what are the results?

The price of drugs has risen, and to support their habits many drug addicts have had to commit acts of robbery and murder to get their drugs.

The American prisons are packed full of people whose only crime was possession of these illegal drugs.

Instead of being an industry that is regulated and controlled you have people selling these drugs to kids in school playgrounds, and shooting each other to protect their territory.

Had the government decided not to criminalize drugs but make it a heavily controlled industry, they could use the tax money for social programs like schools ad to give Americans universal health care.

Please do not misunderstand me I am not in favor for legalizing hard drugs, but the current system is not working at all, but I am all in favor for legalizing online casino gambling.

If I choose to play some hands of blackjack or poker from the comfort of my home what rights does the government have to tell me not to, and what sense does it make that I can not play in a casino over the internet, but I can drive down the street to the local casino and play there.

To enforce this ban millions if not billions of dollars of software and computer hardware will be needed to monitor all of the banks transactions and that money will come from taxes instead of the government taxing online casinos or even having all the online casinos government controlled then they get all the profits to be used to improve the lives of the American citizens, millions of which are bellow the poverty line if not homeless.

The American government needs to start re-thinking its policy of treating its citizens like small children, or the American people need to demand a new government.

Do You Love Yourself

Compassion, sympathy, love, care, are all words that we value very much. We wish to be all these to others. Love others. Be compassionate to others. Care for others and be sympathetic to others. Why not to ourselves?

Why don't we show more compassion to ourselves? This sounds strange but this is true. We treat ourselves shabbily many times. We will work even if we are dead tired. We will worry, even if our mind is exhausted. We will plan and try to help others, when we need more help. We wish to give so much to others that we forget about our own mind and body.

Another emotion, which we use to thrash ourselves with, is guilt. We carry a lot of guilt about our past and keep on revisiting those sins and use them to kick ourselves repeatedly. Goals and working non-stop to achieve those goals, helping others, taking care that no one is hurt, and so many other such desires make us work hard and in the process we forget that we are also human beings.

We forget our body, mind and heart. Once in a while, we need to pamper ourselves. Talk to our own body. Ask it to relax. Talk to our mind. Tell it not to worry so much. Leave things to God. Help others, and at the same time treat yourselves gently to be little more calm and peaceful.

Begin loving yourself like your mother used to do when you were a small baby. You need it at times.

Do You Look Friendly? Take These Quizzes

Most of us visit gardens. Many times, we see the gardener working. How many of compliment and stop by the Gardner to ask about his life? We visit museums. Do we bother to meet the Administrator and congratulate for the good work being done by him/her? We come across many people in our life such as milkman, sales persons etc., but we never try to connect with them as human beings. We are always in a hurry to finish whatever it is and move.

Does this attitude connect us with people? Does it make us happy? With little change in our approach, we can become very friendly persons and get happiness as a reward. Ask a cabbie driver about his/her life and you will wonder about the kinds of problems these persons face. Our own problems will begin looking small. But we are always occupied. We have no time.

If you have lot many problems and find life tough, try this. Enter cancer ward of your nearby hospital. Meet some patients and talk to them. It will give you a new insight about life and the struggles. Reach out to people and be friends with them. Share your life with them and listen to their stories. You will be amazed at life. We forget that our world does not consist of only our family, friends, our work place and ourselves. Our world has many more people. The only difference is that we can ignore them. But that does not make us better human beings. We become better by connecting with people who have no work with us. That kind of relationship is totally selfless, pure and beautiful.

Do You Know A Southern Hero?

You don't have to be a Southerner to know a Southern hero. What's more, you may know one without realizing it. Southern heroes take many forms, but- above all-they're anyone who makes the South's communities stronger, safer and more united. That could mean a devoted teacher, heroic firefighter, tireless volunteer or selfless mother. If you know one, a leading wireless company would like to hear his or her story.

For the past two years, SouthernLINC Wireless has recognized a total of 10 outstanding public servants in the South through its Southern Heroes program. As part of that program, the company will make a donation to each recipient's charity of choice.

After last year's hurricane season, the importance of honoring the South's unsung heroes is more important than ever. After all, many individuals in those communities emerged as heroes. Whether these folks helped give shelter to those who lost their homes to Hurricane Katrina, aided in the rebuilding efforts of communities along the Gulf Coast or organized a communitywide fund-raiser for the victims, SouthernLINC Wireless would like to recognize their heroic efforts.

"In the wake of the devastating 2005 hurricane season, we are more dedicated than ever to paying tribute to those who truly exemplify the characteristics of a Southern hero," said Bob Dawson, president and CEO of SouthernLINC Wireless.

If you know a Southern hero, please share his or her story by taking a moment to visit www.southernheroes.com and submitting the short online entry form between August 1 and August 31, 2006. Entry forms can also be found at any SouthernLINC Wireless retail location. Log on to www.southernlinc.com to find the store nearest you. The five Southern Heroes who will be spotlighted and rewarded will be announced in September 2006. Additionally, SouthernLINC Wireless will further the heroes' efforts by contributing $2,000 to the non-profit organization or charity of each winner's choice for a total of $10,000 in celebration of the company's 10-year anniversary.

Heroes Wanted-If you know a Southern hero who helped during Hurricane Katrina, one wireless company would like to know about it.

Do We Need Labels?

We all know that having a bowl of hot steamy soup is about filling our tummies - and perhaps about a nice warm up after a sojourn in the cold or wet.

But for Campbell Soup it's also about filling the coffers of some very needy folks and facilities - the institutions that teach your children.

More than 30 years ago Campbell introduced its Labels for Education program. This charitable idea produced or contributed extensively to several long-standing and noteworthy projects: Special Olympics, Labels for America, fire safety, fighting hunger, Read Across America, Champion Literacy, Tanner's Manners, Safe America, and the First Lego League. In addition, Campbell's Center for Nutrition and Wellness set up an informative site, http://campbellwellness.com, which teaches children and adult caregivers about staying healthy. The site offers healthy recipes as well as articles and tips on such topics as staying on your diet while dining out, managing stress, antioxidants and other valuable plant byproducts, and exercise while traveling.

Labels for America is about children helping children. Students sign up to volunteer for one of the Campbell's chosen charitable organizations or one of their own choosing. They then complete the Campbell participation form. Once approved, their school is awarded 500 bonus labels for each program, up to a total of 2000 labels per participating student.

Campbell's fire safety effort is a partnership with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to teach children and adults about how to keep themselves and their property safe from fire. When children participate in some way to National Fire Safety Week they earn bonus labels for their school.

The Campbell Soup First LEGO League is an exciting science organization that puts children together with FIRST, a non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire students to explore the wonders of science and technology. Students who volunteer earn 500 bonus labels for their school. This fun-filled learning experience starts with a FIRST junior robotics kit and ends with a student and community team of engaged volunteers who learn from each other while building their robot.

These are just a few of the projects on the Campbell Labels for Education plate (or should I say bowl?)

Why does your school want these Campbell bonus labels? Well, they can be redeemed for valuable merchandise. You can also collect your own labels and submit them as well.

Campbell's massive array of education merchandise includes software, art, computers, cassettes, transportation, electronics, physical-education-related items and music. Your school's label redemption might provide your classroom with a TV/DVD/VCR combo, a flag set, a talking globe, or an easel for your teacher. Your art class could benefit from Labels for Education merchandise such as crayons, brushes, glue sticks and watercolor paint trays. Your school could earn a computer, scanner, printer or digital camera. Sports products for your gym include basketballs, footballs, jump ropes, batting tees, a power climber and even a parachute.

The products whose labels qualify for these great Labels for Education items are not as limited as a warm bowl of Campbell's Soup, however. The corporation's other labels - Franco American, Pepperidge Farm, Swanson, V8, Prego and Pace are eligible as well.
